Passes open and closed: when they close and where to check.
By Edoardo · published October 19, 2026
Before setting off on a pass ride the question is always the same: is it open? Here you will find which passes close in winter, when they did so in recent years, the planned closures in summer and the official sites to check today's status.
In short
Many passes above 2,000 metres close in winter: among the best known are the Stelvio, the Gavia, the Timmelsjoch and the big Swiss passes. In the last three years Furka, Grimsel, Susten, Nufenen and Great St Bernard reopened between late May and late June and closed between mid-October and mid-November. Dolomites passes such as Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo stay open in winter too, with winter tyres or chains on board, but can close for a few hours or days because of snow and avalanches.

We do not update the status day by day: the road operators do it better. Check here before you set off. At the end of the list you will also find the riders' reports collected by Strade da Moto: useful, but the official source is what counts.
