- What is the best time to ride the Dolomites by motorcycle?
- May and June, then from mid-September to early October: the roads are open and traffic is lighter than in high summer. The highest passes can be closed by snow early in the season or after the first autumn snowfall, so always check before you set off.
- Which route should I start with?
- Le Sette Meraviglie Dolomitiche, our green route: 164 km and about four and a half hours of riding, with seven passes around the Sellaronda, Falzarego, Giau and Fedaia. Start and finish in Selva di Val Gardena.
- Do I need a lot of riding experience?
- Some experience is enough: every road is paved, with plenty of hairpins. Blue routes take a full day; red routes exceed 8 hours of riding and are best split over two days.
- Can I ride them with a pillion and on any motorcycle?
- Yes. The routes are designed to be enjoyed two-up and suit practically any kind of motorcycle, from naked bikes to tourers.
- What do the green, blue and red colours mean?
- Just like ski slopes, the colour shows how demanding a route is: green is under 5 hours of riding, blue a full day in the saddle, red over 8 hours, which can be split over two days.
- Where do the routes start?
- Four routes start from Ortisei or Selva in Val Gardena. L'Ellevolante delle Alpi Centrali starts in Milan and finishes in Ortisei via the Splügen, Bernina, Livigno and Stelvio.
- What is in the PDF route sheets?
- The free sheet has the map, stages, number of passes, distance and level. The complete guide adds the stage-by-stage story, elevation profile, recommended stops, fuel stops, the best season and time of day, and curiosities along the way.
