What it is like to ride.

It is a toll road, with toll stations at Ferleiten in the north and near Heiligenblut in the south: motorbikes pay €36.50 a day (2026). It is usually open from early May into the autumn. Without stops, toll station to toll station takes about 45 minutes, but it is worth making a day of it. Kilometres are marked by granite stones on the right edge of the road.

What to see.

From the Fuscher Törl (2,428 m) a 1.5 km detour leads to the Edelweißspitze, at 2,571 metres. On the Carinthian side the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2,369 m) looks out on the Grossglockner and the Pasterze glacier: the name recalls the visit of Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth in 1856.
