What it is like to ride.

From Cortina the climb is short and steeper, with a run of hairpins through the woods; from Misurina and Auronzo it is long and gentle. It is the road from Cortina to Lake Misurina and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, so it is busy in summer: go early.

What to see.

From the top you see the Cristallo and Piz Popena; the trail to Lake Sorapiss starts at the pass. The name recalls a mother and two children who froze to death here in February 1789: three crosses were placed at the pass. The Giro d'Italia has crossed it many times on the way to the Tre Cime.
