In short
The Stelvio Pass (2,758 m) is the highest road pass in Italy and the second highest in Europe, after the Col de l'Iseran. The SS 38 links Bormio, in Valtellina, with Prato allo Stelvio, in Val Venosta, through 88 hairpins: 48 on the South Tyrol side and 40 on the Lombardy side.
Updated October 2026What it is like to ride.

The Trafoi side is the famous one: after the turn-off for Solda the 48 hairpins begin, tight and one after the other, all the way to the top. From Bormio the climb is about 21.5 km with 40 hairpins, steadier until the last 3 km. On the Lombardy side, at about 2,500 metres, the road over the Umbrail Pass branches off towards Switzerland. Set off early: in summer the hairpins fill with motorbikes, cars and cyclists. And bring a warm layer, because up there it is cold even in summer.
What to see.
The pass lies in the Stelvio National Park, between the Ortler and the Livrio glacier, where people ski in summer. The road was built between 1820 and 1825 to a design by Carlo Donegani, and it turned 200 in 2025. Since 1965 the Stelvio has been the Cima Coppi every time the Giro d'Italia crosses it.
